I want you to know how much of a positive role model you were when I first started out at 104 in 2001. You were someone I looked up to. You always had time to share your knowlede and passion for soldiering. I am still looking up to you mate, you are still an inspiration to me and my family. I know that the love you have for your wife and children and the love they have for you will not fade. It will be there always and forever. Live strong mate.

We remember you as a very genuine and caring guy when you did your ew course with jaysin in toowoomba. We lost touch with you and then saw your storey on sixty minutes. I am an old school friend of Lesley's from high school at St Marys. We had many laughs together as teenagers and I have many fond memories of her. What can I say - but I am so sorry to hear of the terrible fate met by Lesley & your beautiful children. I found the story on 60 minutes a true testament to the strong person you obviously are. In the face of such tragedy you have shown strength and courage and done a great service to your beautiful family and their memory. I have just watched your story on Sixty Minutes and geez what can one say? Yes, it ripped my heart out, made me cry, made me feel sick, but most of all it showed me the true spirit that you hold deep within yourself. It was a horrible event that took your beautiful family, it still amazes me that you are able to speak about it, let alone to the whole world. I doubt many would be so brave, and that's what you are incredibly brave, maybe some of it comes from your army training (my brother is also in the army, school of sigs) but I believe that the majority comes from just you, you as the sincere person that you are. I understand that at times like this words are just words, but I hope that in some way they bring comfort to you. Good Luck for all that the future holds for you, may peace come to you sooner rather than later. Your beautiful family are now bright stars watching you from above and will always be with you, all you have to do is look into your heart and they will be there. Please also give your mum a big hug, no doubt this has adversely affected her too.

My heart goes out to you, along with my prayers. I cannot even begin to imagine the enormity of your pain from such a devastating loss, I am so so sorry... You are so strong, so courageous. You did all you could Darrin. Try not blame yourself for taking your family to the bush to live, you most likely chose that place because you believed it was the best environment for your family to live in.Fires can burn in any environment... I truly believe in living in the bush or farm setting is far safer & healthier than living in a city, especially for children. Darrin a Bible verse comes to mind which I cling to at times, ' Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them , and they will be his people. If I were in the same position I wish I had a hero like you by my side to ensure my best chance of survival. I believe you have been left behind for a reason. That reason will become more apparent to you as you go along life's track. My parents moved their family to the outback when I was young, for a better lifestyle. I am still grateful to them as I had a wonderful childhood, no different to what you and your darling wife planned. I am willing to pay more taxes to subsidise upgrading to fire proof outback homes, or to subsidise fire shelters on each outback block. It's about time us city folk helped and encouraged families who live in our dense bushland. We must never let this happen to our families again! Our baby is 18months, we live in the bush too in nsw, the reports on the fires moved me, your story shook me so hard it hit home, we could be next, your families passings will not go in vain, we are now going to spend our money on a fire bunker, even though our dam is only 30 metres from the house.Their memory will be with me forever, thankyou for sharing, you have made a diffrence, only one of the reasons why you lived to tell their story.My love to you ,your wife and your babies.

Thank you for sharing your story. My 4 year old daughter recently amputated all the toes on her right foot in an accident. As her mother I have found it difficult to deal with but watching your story made me realise how small our hiccup is and how I need to be grateful she is here and healthy. We watched your story and when she saw your feet she said "Look mummy he has feet like my foot. They look very sore now, but mine is better now and his will get better soon too". My heart aches for your loss. Your strength is truly remarkable. God left you behind for a good reason even though right now nothing makes sense. I hope you find peace in your heart someday. I am a 45yo father of 2 and I cried tonight. We have NO idea of your pain. The pyshical and emotional pain, the loss, the sorrow, and you managed to smile towards the end of the interview! You may deny it but what you did that day was nothing short of super human, and calling you a "hero" does not even come close to the truth. It's the Australian spirit in you mate, that makes me proud to stand behind you, and call myself an Australian.

Darrin it's been almost 15 years since we were in 103 Medium Battery. They were great times when I heard of your tragedy I went looking and found a unit photo with you in it. It was great to see those faces again the likes of Homos and his hair, Blackie Winter, Hootch Turner, Boof, Quinnie, Stu Goulding and the list goes on I will ensure that a copy comes your way. As a parent my heart goes out to you. Whilst watching your interview on 60 Minutes my husband had to leave the room, upset by what you as a father went through and will continue to go through. We left our home in Warburton 4 times during that horrible fire season. Our area was spared and even though my family got through the confusion of go, come back, stay then leave, we still take moments in knowing that the events of that day/s could have been very different for us. I saw you on 60 Minutes tonight. I'm so sorry for your loss. My wife and I were brought to tears watching your story. It was overwhelming to hear of the tragedy of the bush fires. It was so very confronting to hear of your loss. We can't imagine what it's like to lose your family and everything. As a member of the Defence Force, I know that the lifestyle you've known has helped you through your darkest hour, but I agree with Charles Whooley. You have a hell of a lot of heart. The first year that i spent with you as an instructor at Kapooka, realy opened my eyes to how a person can lead teach and mentor people without being over powering. I met your mother outside of the Alfred Hospital while you were in a coma. The first thing i noticed about your mother was the quiet dignity that shone through when telling me of your story as we shared a smoke and talked. After seeing you on 60 minutes tonight i saw again that strength of character that shone in your mothers face that day, and was honored to have spoken to her and to be reminded of how hard it was for you to have gone through what you have and still have the strength and courage to talk about it.
