Lunch with John Laws, Phil Kearns and Surprise Guests
at Machiavelli Sydney

Join one of the most influential and successful broadcasters of our time, John Laws and former Australian Rugby Union player and sports commentator Phil Kearns for lunch at Machiavelli. Located in the heart of the Sydney CBD, Machiavelli is an institution in Italian dining and regularly hosts some of Australia's most famous faces.

John Laws switched off his famous golden microphone and retired from broadcasting in November 2007 after a phenomenal 55 years in radio. He interspersed his time at the top of the ratings with television presenting, speaking engagements and honourable philanthropic work that led to two awards from the Queen Ð an Order of the British Empire (O.B.E) in 1974 and a Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E) in 1978.

Phil Kearns is undoubtedly one of the most respected and recognisable figures in World Rugby. He was capped 67 times in Test Rugby and led The Wallabies as captain in 10 Tests before succumbing to injury in 1999 during the successful World Cup Campaign. Now a regular commentator and panelist for FOX Sports, Phil provides a perceptive and entertaining view of the game.

You and 3 friends will have the honour of joining these influential and inspiring figures along with several surprise guests if you are the winning bidder on this truly priceless prize!

An Atlas of Australia's Wars 2nd Ed by: John Coates

Covering frontier conflict and colonial wars during the nineteenth century, and wars in which Australians have been involved in from 1901 to 2005, this is a book like no other. Adequate maps are of the highest importance in armed conflict, where campaigns have risen or fallen, succeeded or failed, for the want of reliable maps or charts. Providing readers with a link between the operations and campaigns described in the text and their expression in graphic form by the maps, this fascinating book features a revised and expanded text outlining Australia's military involvement in conflicts such as East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as an appendix of Victoria Cross Winners. Each map is illustrated in full colour and is accompanied by numerous moving photographs and paintings. Handsomely bound in a slip-case, this atlas relates a magnificent story of competence, courage, and self-sacrifice by Australia's armed services.

Message Board

Hello to all,

I would like to thank everyone for supporting this website, T-bone Productions and those that have donated prizes to make this site a reality.
To everyone who has taken time out to write small messages of encouragement, you won't know how much your words have enabled me to keep my chin up at times. I have read every one of them again and again and have heard from old mates and those that I have mentored during recruit training. It is always good as an instructor to know that you have made a difference in the lives of others in some small way. Finally I hope you all got what you were after in the bidding war and I am sure there will be much conversation in regard to who edged who out of the stakes.

Thank you and I am proud to be an Australian like all of you
Cheers, Darrin

Gibbo,

I found this quote and it reminded me of you. “One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” You truly have all of these. It has been an honour and pleasure to have worked with you and met your family back in Darwin. May your memories give you strength and may you overcome the pain you are suffering. Gibbo you have inspired many, and those who have met you know you are a very loving and caring husband and father. I’m deeply saddened by your loss. Cherish the memories of the times you spent together. We are all with you during this time of grief. xx

Courage

There is no courage without fear,

No courage without others near,

Whether in your heart, or when apart,

From those that you hold most dear.

There is no courage without hope,

No courage if you say you can't cope,

When you walk away, and let others stay,

There is no courage without life,

To have courage, you don't need strife.

You don't need to be left behind, focuss on a way to find,

Your dream of courage rife.

And you will have found your dream

For belief takes the most courage.

We remember you as a very genuine and caring guy when you did your ew course with jaysin in toowoomba. We lost touch with you and then saw your storey on sixty minutes. We were shocked and our hearts were ripped out to see the true pain you have been and come through. You are a true hero and inspiration and will always be in our thoughts.

I wish you all the best and wish I could say or do more. Just know u r in my thoughts.

Darrin,

You are a true inspiration to me, I watched the story on 60 minutes and it's taken me a few weeks to build up the courage to type you these words!! You are one amazing person, I am going through a tough period in my life but your courage and determination has inspired me. I cried like everyone else in the world that watched your interview but afterwards I had an overall feeling of happiness knowing i'm going to make a difference somehow/somewhere in this world. Good luck for the future mate.

Hello Darrin,

We don't know you, but just wanted to send a note to say how your story on 60 minutes touched out hearts - such a sad story and a terrible tragedy. We could never begin to imagine what you are going through but want you to know that your spirit to survive and courage will be an inspiration to our family always. Take care.

Dear Darrin (Senior Dario),

I just want to pass on my sincerest condolences for your wife and three children. I know we only met briefly but i hope you can call on me if you need anything. Cheers mate, 'ba ho maromak'

Gibbo,

So sorry to hear of your tragic loss, and to see it on sixty minutes made all the more real. Ben Jones and my thoughts are with you mate, and like so many other Army mates, we are here to help. Take care mate, you buddies from Iraq.

Hi Darrin,

I am an old school friend of Lesley's from high school at St Marys. We had many laughs together as teenagers and I have many fond memories of her. What can I say - but I am so sorry to hear of the terrible fate met by Lesley & your beautiful children. I found the story on 60 minutes a true testament to the strong person you obviously are. In the face of such tragedy you have shown strength and courage and done a great service to your beautiful family and their memory. I understand that words cannot change anything, but I do hope you can find some comfort in these words. Lesley was a beautiful girl and I have no doubt that your kids were equally as beautiful. They will always be in your heart and always be with you. I sincerely hope that you receive all the physical and emotional support that you need. I send all my love to a man I have never met but to me is now a truely inspriational hero. All the very best to you Darrin.

I would like to say thank you to all who writes in this column. It is messages of encouragement like these that keep people like me going. With such warm support how can anyone give up. I am fine and have every support of family and many new friends such as you all. I love your caring hearts and appreciate your concerns. I will mention all your support to Lesley, Kiona, Jye, and little Ava next time I visit them just down the road from my house at the local cemetery Love and Cheers

Hi Darrin,

I have just watched your story on Sixty Minutes and geez what can one say? Yes, it ripped my heart out, made me cry, made me feel sick, but most of all it showed me the true spirit that you hold deep within yourself. It was a horrible event that took your beautiful family, it still amazes me that you are able to speak about it, let alone to the whole world. I doubt many would be so brave, and that's what you are incredibly brave, maybe some of it comes from your army training (my brother is also in the army, school of sigs) but I believe that the majority comes from just you, you as the sincere person that you are. I understand that at times like this words are just words, but I hope that in some way they bring comfort to you. Good Luck for all that the future holds for you, may peace come to you sooner rather than later. Your beautiful family are now bright stars watching you from above and will always be with you, all you have to do is look into your heart and they will be there. Please also give your mum a big hug, no doubt this has adversely affected her too.

Hi Darrin,

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your heartbreaking but courageous story with the world. You truly are an inspirational man. I wish you all the best in the future. I lost my younger brother to a stroke last year after many health complications... and I hope you know that death is just a different way to see a person. All the best mate.

Hello Darrin,

What a truly remarkable and courageous human being you are! On behalf of my family please accept our deepest, deepest sympathy over your horrendous loss - your courage and tenacity is nothing short of inspiring. Many Australians are crying for you and with you - you've helped us put things into perspective because with all of life's pressures it doesn't come close to what you have walked through and continue to walk through. I've dealt with grief and loss - my thoughts and prayers will be continually with you. May God bless, comfort and strengthen you for the years ahead, in the overwhelming times, the sad times and the painful times and bring peace into your heart once again. Thank you for sharing your story, it has touched my heart. Warmest regards.

Darrin,

I cannot even begin to imagine what you have and are going through. I just really wanted you to know that we are thinking of you and hold you in our hearts. You are an inspiration to all and what I would call a true hero.

I would like to thank Tim Webster at 2UE for bringing the fundraising auction to the public. Will let everyone I know to dig deep.

Darrin im a father of three boys, mate if i can go through life with half your strength im going to go a long way ! God bless you my friend.

What an amazing man.Take care. All my love.

My thoughts are with you, if there is anything I could do to assist but sing out, there is plenty of us that are ready to swing in and help. Look on face book if you can and get back into the loop with some of the old mates.

Darrin,

So sorry to hear and see your pain. We served in Cambodia together. I was the Navy guy in yr room in induction. Was much easier over there. I hope in time things get better mate. Will send you some of my photos of us from 1993.

Darrin,

I am not sure if you remember me but we worked together in Darwin.Craigy is what they call me. I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I only just heard last week when I saw your interview on 60 minutes. I was touch by your strength and courage. Stay strong and I wish you good luck in your future. Once again my condolences.

Gibbo,

So sorry to hear of your tragic loss mate. I haven't seen you for a couple of years but I'll come down and visit as soon as I can. Your mate Sharpey

Hi Darrin,

My heart goes out to you, along with my prayers. I cannot even begin to imagine the enormity of your pain from such a devastating loss, I am so so sorry... You are so strong, so courageous. You did all you could Darrin. Try not blame yourself for taking your family to the bush to live, you most likely chose that place because you believed it was the best environment for your family to live in.Fires can burn in any environment... I truly believe in living in the bush or farm setting is far safer & healthier than living in a city, especially for children. Darrin a Bible verse comes to mind which I cling to at times, ' Look, the home of God is now among his people! He will live with them , and they will be his people. God himself will be with them He will remove all of their sorrows, there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. For the old world and its evils are gone forever. Revelation chpt21:3-5 Keep Strong Darrin You are an Amazing & Inspirational Man, Husband & Father to your Wife, Children & Family... May God give you Peace & His Loving Presence Always...

Darrin,

The amazing courage, spirit and heart you displayed on Current Affair is beyond comprehension. Your efforts to save your family extremely heroic. God Bless.

Hi Darrin,

I'm not sure if you will remember me, but we new each other way back in the days of R.S.P.C.A yagoona. Like many others i'm sure, i was shocked and saddened to hear of your personal tradgedy on 60 Minutes. Darrin, i would never assume that i know exactly what you went through and are still going through, but please know that i am sincerely sorry for your loss. I wish i could offer you words of inspiration and encouragement, that would make a difference, but after seeing you on 60 Minutes, i can tell you are a remarkable man, and are in fact an inspiration to the rest of us. Stay strong Darrin. I wish you well, and my thoughts are with you at this time.

Gibo,

I am so sorry mate.

So sorry Darrin. If you need anything, just ask.

Thinking of you all the time. All our love Deb & Larry

Hi Darrin,
Not sure if u remember me but I am Tara's Godmother. I remember you from back in the day (at Redfern) when you where a young boy and teenager. I always thought that you were a beautiful soul back then and it seems nothing has changed. I am so truly sorry for your loss Darrin and there are no words in which to describe your strength and courage. You are such an inspiration to your family, all who know you and I'm sure to the whole now! Keep going....take care & stay strong (they breed em tough in Redfern!)

Hi Darrin,
We just want you to know that we love you, are proud of you and are her for you always and always.

All our love always Daz. You are a true Australian hero who i am so proud of.

Dear Darrin,
I am very sorry for your immeasurable loss. I could not find the words to adequately describe the courage you display in your situation. You are a shining example of the human spirit and an inspiration to many. If ever you find yourself short on friends please do not hesitate in reaching out. I may not have much to offer other than a stubbie and a laugh but you are welcome to both if you are ever in Kempsey. Sincerest wishes, Michael

Dear Darrin,
I just want to tell you that you are a true inspiration to me and i am sure many other people too. You are an incredibly brave and strong man, a hero in my eyes. I watched you tell your story on 60 minutes and was filled with emotion and disbelief of how anyone could ever be so strong. Your smile is heart warming. My prayers are with you.

G'day Gibbo,
Stay strong..... From Bootha and Celeste Riles, Cowboy and Michelle Tatey and Amanda etc......

Dear Darrin,
Thankyou for sharing your story with us. You are a hero, your family would have been so proud of the way you handled the situation on that black saturday. If I were in the same position I wish I had a hero like you by my side to ensure my best chance of survival. I believe you have been left behind for a reason. That reason will become more apparent to you as you go along life's track. My parents moved their family to the outback when I was young, for a better lifestyle. I am still grateful to them as I had a wonderful childhood, no different to what you and your darling wife planned. I am willing to pay more taxes to subsidise upgrading to fire proof outback homes, or to subsidise fire shelters on each outback block. It's about time us city folk helped and encouraged families who live in our dense bushland. We must never let this happen to our families again! Our thoughts and love are with you and always will be.

Hello Darrin,
I too am lost for words after watching your story. I believe you told the saddest story I have ever watched on television. My heart aches for the loss of your beautiful family and the permanent physical and emotional scars on your body. God bless you Darrin.

I can't believe that you have had such a horrific time but still able to be so humble and honorable as you showed yourself to be on 60 minutes. Your little angels must be sending you love and strength to help you through the days. From an old friend who is thinging of you and hoping you are able to find some moments ( no matter how small) of joy in you day.

Darrin,
I cried watching you last night and I'm certain I was not the only one. You are an amazing man, and as Charles said, it was not your Army background, it is your incredible heart. The interview was filled with so much emotion that it filled our lounge room. God Bless You Darrin.

Darrin,
I watched your tragic story on 60 Minutes last night and I sobbed and sobbed - for you, for the precious family you lost and for the horrifying ordeal you and the other victims of the Victoria Bush Fires went through. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I just wish I were able to heal your pain. Please know that, even though I don't know you, my heart, my thoughts and my love go out to you. You are such an incredibly strong and courageous man. Someone truly special to be able to experience what you did and carry on. Keep the memory of your wife and children alive. Know that wherever you are, they are and always will be right there with you. May God give you the strength to carry on and may time gently heal your pain and repair your wounds. With love...

Mate am so sorry for your loss

Thank you for sharing your story. My 4 year old daughter recently amputated all the toes on her right foot in an accident. As her mother I have found it difficult to deal with but watching your story made me realise how small our hiccup is and how I need to be grateful she is here and healthy. We watched your story and when she saw your feet she said "Look mummy he has feet like my foot. They look very sore now, but mine is better now and his will get better soon too". You are a tribute to the memory of your wife and children. They will be so proud of you. Take Care and thank you.

Darrin,
I sat in total disbelief listening to your story and the unimaginable hell that you have been through. Your courage, strength and determination is exceptional. You are a truly amazing person.

Dear Darrin,
Thank you for sharing your personal story from B/S, you are an inspirational person who has humbled us with your courage. I am so sorry this has happened to you and your beautiful family. Truly moved by your story, and probably will be forever.

Hi Darrin,
I saw your story on 60minutes tonight and was in tears the whole time. I can't tell you how sorry I am for you but also appreciate just how strong you are. You are an unbelievable inspiration and make me want to be a better person. I wish you all the best and pray that you stay strong not only for your family but for the rest of us who need people like you to remind us how precious life is. Take care and remember that Australia is behind you mate, love from myself and my family xo

Darrin,
My heart aches for your loss. Your strength is truly remarkable. God left you behind for a good reason even though right now nothing makes sense. I hope you find peace in your heart someday. I will pray for you and your children and wife.Your journey will forever be a difficult one. I am so sorry for that. Continue the fight and know that your story and the faces of your beautiful children and wife has touched so many.

Darrin,
I am a 45yo father of 2 and I cried tonight. We have NO idea of your pain. The pyshical and emotional pain, the loss, the sorrow, and you managed to smile towards the end of the interview! You may deny it but what you did that day was nothing short of super human, and calling you a "hero" does not even come close to the truth. It's the Australian spirit in you mate, that makes me proud to stand behind you, and call myself an Australian.

Darrin it's been almost 15 years since we were in 103 Medium Battery. They were great times when I heard of your tragedy I went looking and found a unit photo with you in it. It was great to see those faces again the likes of Homos and his hair, Blackie Winter, Hootch Turner, Boof, Quinnie, Stu Goulding and the list goes on I will ensure that a copy comes your way. I speak for everybody in 103 at the time we are sorry for your loss. You will always be a Gunner. UBIQUE

As a parent my heart goes out to you. Whilst watching your interview on 60 Minutes my husband had to leave the room, upset by what you as a father went through and will continue to go through. I said to my husband after all you have been through, you still managed a smile. I salute you! Treasure your memorise. Jodie x

Hi Darrin,
Thankyou for your bravery in telling us your story on 60 Minutes. My heart is breaking for your family. I have two boys, Taron 6 and Marcus 2. We left our home in Warburton 4 times during that horrible fire season. Our area was spared and even though my family got through the confusion of go, come back, stay then leave, we still take moments in knowing that the events of that day/s could have been very different for us. We feel absoulute compassion for you and all those who lost lives and loved ones. All our love, Crystal, Troy, Taron and Marcus.xxx

Darrin,
I saw you on 60 Minutes tonight. I'm so sorry for your loss. My wife and I were brought to tears watching your story. It was overwhelming to hear of the tragedy of the bush fires. It was so very confronting to hear of your loss. We can't imagine what it's like to lose your family and everything. As a member of the Defence Force, I know that the lifestyle you've known has helped you through your darkest hour, but I agree with Charles Whooley. You have a hell of a lot of heart. May God bless you. And good luck for the future.

I was moved to tears by the story on 60min. You are a pillar of strength. When i tucked my 4y.o in that night I hoped you felt it. May peace and warmth fill your life, you will not be forgotton, nor shall your family. MY utmost regards.

We will pray for your healing - stay strong and God bless you.

Your experience and attitude has touched our hearts and souls. You truely are an amazing human being!

Hi Darrin,
Your a legend mate, and it took alot of courage to share your story. 'Keep on truckin mate!' Cheers

I met your mother outside of the Alfred Hospital while you were in a coma. The first thing i noticed about your mother was the quiet dignity that shone through when telling me of your story as we shared a smoke and talked. After seeing you on 60 minutes tonight i saw again that strength of character that shone in your mothers face that day, and was honored to have spoken to her and to be reminded of how hard it was for you to have gone through what you have and still have the strength and courage to talk about it.

You are such an inspiration. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

our thoughts and prays are with you Darrin from us here in Tassie xxxx
